Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast widely studied for its role in supporting gastrointestinal health, including various conditions affecting the lower end of the digestive tract, which includes the rectum. Clinical studies have shown that S. boulardii can be effective in preventing and treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridium difficile infection, and some forms of inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis, which can impact rectal health. There is also evidence supporting its use in managing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and traveler’s diarrhea. The mechanisms for these benefits include inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, modulation of the host immune response, enhancement of mucosal barrier function, and production of anti-toxin effects. However, direct evidence specific to rectal disorders (such as proctitis or hemorrhoids) is limited. Most research focuses on its action throughout the colon and lower intestinal tract, which indirectly supports rectal health due to the continuity of the gut mucosa and microbial environment. Thus, while S. boulardii is not a primary treatment for rectal diseases, its validated use in supporting overall gut health and preventing or managing diarrheal diseases justifies its inclusion for general lower gastrointestinal (including rectal) support.
