Evidence supporting the use of: Plum fiber
For the body system: Rectum
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Plum fiber, derived from plums (Prunus domestica), is primarily used to support digestive health, particularly bowel regularity, due to its high content of insoluble and soluble fibers. Scientific evidence indicates that dietary fibers like those found in plums can enhance stool bulk, soften stools, and promote regular bowel movements, which directly supports the rectal body system by reducing constipation and straining during defecation. Several clinical studies have specifically examined dried plums (prunes), showing they are effective at increasing stool frequency and improving stool consistency in individuals with constipation (Stacewicz-Sapuntzakis et al., 2011). The efficacy is attributed to both the fiber and the presence of sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol with mild laxative properties.
While traditional use of prunes for constipation is well-documented, the rating here is based on modern scientific validation. Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials have consistently reported that prune consumption is more effective than some common over-the-counter laxatives in relieving mild to moderate constipation (Lever et al., 2014). This evidence justifies the use of plum fiber as a supportive ingredient for rectal and general digestive health. However, while plum fiber is effective for functional constipation, it should not be considered a treatment for serious rectal conditions without medical supervision.
