Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin E (delta-tocotrienol) has been investigated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder. While Vitamin E in general (including tocopherols and tocotrienols) has been studied for skin health and as a topical adjunct in psoriasis, most research focuses on alpha-tocopherol. There is limited but emerging scientific evidence suggesting that delta-tocotrienol, a less common form of Vitamin E, may modulate inflammatory pathways (such as NF-κB) implicated in psoriasis pathogenesis. In vitro and some animal studies have demonstrated that tocotrienols can reduce oxidative stress and suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are elevated in psoriatic lesions. However, direct clinical trials using delta-tocotrienol specifically in psoriasis patients are scarce. Some small studies and case reports have explored the use of oral or topical Vitamin E (not distinguishing tocotrienol isomers) and found mild improvements in symptoms such as erythema and scaling, though results are inconsistent and often confounded by combination with other treatments. Currently, there is modest scientific rationale for the use of delta-tocotrienol in psoriasis based primarily on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects observed in preclinical studies, but robust clinical evidence and specific trials are lacking. As such, the evidence level is low (2/5), and more research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety in this context.
