Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Triterpenes are a large class of naturally occurring compounds found in many plants, including licorice (glycyrrhizin), Centella asiatica (asiaticoside), and others. Historically, plant preparations containing triterpenes have been used in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for skin conditions including psoriasis. The rationale is often based on their reported anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antioxidant properties. However, while some individual triterpenes have been investigated for their effects on skin inflammation and barrier repair, there is limited high-quality clinical evidence supporting their efficacy specifically for psoriasis. Most studies are preclinical (cell culture or animal models) or involve related inflammatory skin conditions. For example, betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, and asiaticoside have shown anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models, but robust human trials in psoriasis are lacking. Therefore, the use of unspecified triterpenes for psoriasis is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific validation. More research, especially well-designed clinical trials, is needed to clarify their potential benefit in psoriasis management.
