Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The Sichuan Pagoda Tree, also known as Styphnolobium japonicum or formerly Sophora japonica, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its flower buds (commonly called "Huai Hua Mi") and other parts have been used primarily for their anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and vascular-protective properties. In the context of psoriasis, traditional formulations sometimes include Sichuan Pagoda Tree because of its believed ability to "cool the blood" and reduce inflammation, both of which are seen as underlying causes of skin eruptions in TCM theory.

However, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Sichuan Pagoda Tree specifically for psoriasis. Most of the research to date has focused on its general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, or its use in treating hemorrhoids and bleeding disorders. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that components such as rutin and quercetin found in the tree may modulate inflammatory pathways relevant to psoriasis, but robust clinical trials in humans with psoriasis are lacking. Thus, the use of Sichuan Pagoda Tree for psoriasis remains primarily tradition-based, with only indirect or preliminary scientific support at best.

In summary, while Sichuan Pagoda Tree is included in some traditional remedies for psoriasis, its use for this condition is not strongly validated by modern clinical research.
