Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Phyllanthus fraternus, a member of the Phyllanthaceae family, is a plant used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asia. Its use in treating skin diseases, including psoriasis, is primarily rooted in traditional herbal practices rather than robust scientific validation. In Ayurveda and folk medicine, related species such as Phyllanthus niruri and Phyllanthus fraternus are used for their purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. Some traditional practitioners recommend preparations of Phyllanthus fraternus for chronic skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, based on the general belief in its ability to "purify blood" and alleviate inflammatory symptoms. However, there is very limited direct scientific research specifically investigating the efficacy of Phyllanthus fraternus in the treatment or management of psoriasis. While the plant contains bioactive compounds such as lignans, flavonoids, and tannins with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, no clinical trials or significant preclinical studies have established its therapeutic benefit in psoriasis. Most references to its use for psoriasis are anecdotal or based on traditional herbal formularies. Thus, the evidence supporting its use in psoriasis is weak and should be considered traditional, with a low evidence rating.
