Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Paeoniflorin is a bioactive compound derived from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora, a plant commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. In recent years, there has been increasing scientific interest in paeoniflorin’s potential for treating inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including psoriasis. Several preclinical studies have investigated its effects on psoriasis-like models. For instance, mouse studies have shown that paeoniflorin can reduce skin inflammation and the infiltration of immune cells by modulating cytokine production, notably decreasing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. These anti-inflammatory effects are thought to result from the inhibition of NF-κB signaling and the JAK/STAT pathway.

However, most of the evidence supporting paeoniflorin’s use in psoriasis is limited to animal models or in vitro studies. There are very few clinical trials in humans directly examining paeoniflorin for psoriasis, and those that exist are preliminary. While these studies suggest possible benefits, the current level of scientific validation is low, with insufficient robust clinical data to confirm efficacy or optimal dosing in humans. Thus, paeoniflorin’s use for psoriasis is primarily supported by preclinical scientific evidence, and more rigorous human trials are needed to establish its clinical relevance.
