Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kaempferol is a flavonoid found in various fruits and vegetables, and it has been studied for a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The scientific interest in kaempferol for psoriasis stems from these properties, as psoriasis is characterized by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Several preclinical studies—primarily in vitro and animal models—have demonstrated that kaempferol can inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17) and modulate signaling pathways associated with keratinocyte proliferation, which are key features in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. For example, a 2019 study published in Experimental Dermatology found that kaempferol inhibited keratinocyte proliferation and reduced inflammation in a mouse model of psoriasis-like skin inflammation. Additionally, kaempferol has been shown to suppress the activation of NF-κB, a transcription factor involved in inflammation. However, there is currently a lack of robust human clinical trials directly evaluating the efficacy and safety of kaempferol for treating psoriasis. As such, while the mechanistic and preclinical evidence is promising, clinical translation remains unproven, and kaempferol is not a standard or widely recommended treatment for psoriasis at this time.
