Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage. Its use for prostate health is based on its potential to modulate estrogen metabolism and influence hormone-related pathways. Preclinical studies suggest that I3C can inhibit the proliferation of prostate cancer cells in vitro and may alter androgen and estrogen pathways relevant to prostate tissue. Some animal studies also report anti-cancer effects. However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. A few small-scale human trials have evaluated I3C or its metabolite, diindolylmethane (DIM), for prostate health endpoints, but the results are preliminary and often underpowered. Most available data focus on breast and cervical health, not the prostate specifically. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale for I3C’s use in supporting prostate health, and some early research is promising, the overall evidence remains limited and inconclusive. Larger, well-controlled human studies are needed to substantiate its effectiveness for prostate health.
