Vitamin B9, also known as folate, is essential during pregnancy due to its well-established role in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) in the developing fetus. The calcium salt of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) is a bioactive, natural form of folate, and is used as a supplement, including for women who may have difficulties converting synthetic folic acid to its active form due to genetic polymorphisms (such as MTHFR mutations). Multiple high-quality studies and health organizations (including the CDC, WHO, and ACOG) strongly recommend folate supplementation before conception and during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of major birth defects of the baby's brain and spine, such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Folate is also crucial for supporting rapid cell division and growth during pregnancy, and maternal deficiency is associated with anemia and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. Calcium 5-MTHF is considered as effective as folic acid for these purposes and may offer advantages for individuals with impaired folic acid metabolism. Therefore, the use of vitamin B9 (including in the form of calcium methyltetrahydrofolate) during pregnancy is strongly supported by robust scientific evidence.
