For the health condition: Pneumonia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lomatium dissectum, commonly known as fernleaf biscuitroot or desert parsley, has a long history of use in Native American and herbal traditions for supporting respiratory health, including conditions such as pneumonia. Historically, various Native American tribes used the root of Lomatium dissectum to treat coughs, colds, influenza, and bronchial infections, and it was sometimes specifically mentioned for more severe lung ailments like pneumonia. Early 20th-century herbalists in the United States also adopted Lomatium for respiratory infections, especially during the 1918 influenza pandemic, though documentation was largely anecdotal.
Modern scientific studies on Lomatium dissectum are limited. Some in vitro research indicates that extracts from the root may have antimicrobial and antiviral properties, but these findings are preliminary and do not directly examine its efficacy in treating pneumonia in humans. There are no published clinical trials evaluating Lomatium dissectum for pneumonia specifically. The theoretical basis for its traditional use is attributed to its content of coumarins and other phytochemicals that might modulate immune response or pathogen growth, but this remains speculative. Therefore, its use for pneumonia is primarily supported by traditional knowledge, with minimal scientific validation to date.
