Evidence supporting the use of: Curcuma comosa
For the health condition: PMS Type S
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Curcuma comosa is traditionally used in Southeast Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Thailand, for women’s health issues, including menstrual disorders and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The traditional use is based primarily on its perceived phytoestrogenic properties, with historical applications to relieve abdominal discomfort, bloating, and mood changes thought to be related to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle (including what is now classified as PMS Type S, or PMS with significant somatic symptoms like bloating and breast tenderness). Scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Curcuma comosa contains phytoestrogens and may have estrogenic activity, clinical trials in humans specifically addressing PMS symptoms are scarce or nonexistent. No high-quality, large-scale studies have directly evaluated its efficacy for PMS Type S. Thus, while the herb is used in traditional Thai medicine for menstrual-related symptoms, its use for PMS Type S remains primarily supported by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
