Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogenic herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its purported ability to promote overall health and balance bodily systems. In the context of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), especially PMS Type C (which refers to carbohydrate craving type, often associated with symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and increased appetite for sweets), ashwagandha has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to help manage stress, mood swings, and fatigue—all of which can be experienced during PMS. However, there is little to no direct historical or scientific documentation tying ashwagandha specifically to the treatment of PMS Type C or carbohydrate cravings. Most references to ashwagandha and PMS relate to its adaptogenic effects, such as stress relief and mild mood stabilization, which might theoretically help with some PMS symptoms.

Scientifically, there is a lack of robust clinical studies directly evaluating ashwagandha for PMS, let alone for the specific Type C variant. The primary evidence for its use comes from general studies showing ashwagandha’s potential to lower cortisol and reduce stress, which could indirectly benefit PMS symptoms. However, no direct trials have confirmed efficacy for carbohydrate cravings or PMS Type C. Thus, its use for this purpose is based more on traditional and theoretical grounds than on solid scientific validation.
