Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vervain (Verbena officinalis or related species) has a long history of use in European traditional herbal medicine, where it has been employed for a variety of ailments, including those related to women's health. In the context of PMS Type A (characterized primarily by anxiety, irritability, and mood swings), vervain has been valued in traditional herbalism for its perceived calming and anxiolytic properties. Historical sources from European herbalists and folk medicine suggest the use of vervain as a mild nervine, believed to help with tension, restlessness, and emotional upset. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence specifically validating vervain’s efficacy for PMS symptoms, especially for the PMS Type A category. Most modern herbal references echo its traditional use for mild nervous conditions, but do not cite clinical trials or pharmacological studies confirming benefit for PMS. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and supported by anecdotal and historical accounts, evidence from controlled scientific studies is either lacking or very limited. As a result, vervain’s use for PMS Type A is best described as traditional with low-level evidence.
