Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is widely used for the management of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), particularly PMS Type A, which is characterized by symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and tension. Scientific studies have provided substantial evidence supporting the efficacy of chaste tree in alleviating these symptoms. The presumed mechanism involves modulation of prolactin secretion via dopaminergic effects, which can help correct the hormonal imbalances (especially elevated prolactin) often implicated in PMS Type A.
Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated a significant reduction in PMS symptoms among women using Vitex extracts compared to placebo. For example, a 2001 study published in the BMJ found that women receiving Vitex agnus-castus extract had a greater reduction in overall PMS symptoms, particularly irritability, mood alteration, anger, and headache. A 2012 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Women’s Health also concluded that Vitex is significantly more effective than placebo in treating PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Traditional use supports these findings, as chaste tree has a long history in European herbal medicine for treating menstrual disorders. However, the current clinical evidence means its use is not only based on tradition but also validated by modern research. Overall, chaste tree is considered an effective and well-tolerated herbal option for women suffering from PMS Type A symptoms.
