Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Yogurt is used to support the immune system, particularly the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), which includes Peyer’s patches. Peyer’s patches are specialized lymphoid follicles located in the small intestine that play a key role in immune surveillance and response. Scientific studies have shown that the consumption of yogurt containing live probiotic cultures can modulate immune function, in part by interacting with these patches. Probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species in yogurt are known to influence the gut microbiota, which in turn impacts the development and functioning of Peyer’s patches. Some research suggests that probiotics can enhance the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and stimulate immune cells within these structures, potentially improving mucosal immunity.

However, while there are preclinical and clinical studies supporting yogurt’s impact on various immune parameters, direct evidence specifically linking yogurt consumption to enhanced function of Peyer’s patches in humans is limited. Most findings are extrapolated from broader studies on gut immunity or animal models. Thus, the use of yogurt for supporting Peyer’s patches is scientifically plausible and partially validated, but the strength of direct evidence is moderate rather than strong.
