Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

2-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) found abundantly in human breast milk. Its use to support the immune system, particularly the gut-associated lymphoid tissue such as Peyer’s patches, is increasingly supported by scientific research, though most evidence is preclinical or from animal models. Several studies have shown that 2'-FL can modulate the gut microbiota, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacteria, which in turn interact with the mucosal immune system. Research in mice has demonstrated that dietary 2'-FL can lead to increased development and function of Peyer’s patches, including enhanced maturation of dendritic cells and increased secretory IgA production. These immune-modulating effects are believed to help with the development of oral tolerance and defense against pathogens. However, while these findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans remains limited. Some early trials in infants supplemented with 2'-FL show improved immune markers and a lower incidence of infections, but direct effects on Peyer’s patches specifically in humans are not fully established. In summary, 2'-FL is scientifically justified as a support for immune function involving Peyer’s patches, but the strength of direct evidence, especially in humans, warrants a moderate rating.
