Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sesbania species, including Sesbania grandiflora and Sesbania sesban, have been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, for the treatment of intestinal parasites such as nematodes and worms. Traditional healers have employed various parts of the plant, especially seeds and leaves, in decoctions or as powders to expel intestinal worms in humans and animals. The basis for this use is largely anecdotal and grounded in ethnobotanical records rather than systematic clinical evaluation.
Scientific validation for Sesbania’s anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) efficacy is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Sesbania seeds or leaves may have activity against certain helminths, possibly due to the presence of bioactive compounds such as saponins and alkaloids. However, the number of studies is small, sample sizes are limited, and results are not consistently replicated. There are no robust clinical trials confirming efficacy in humans. As a result, the evidence supporting Sesbania’s traditional use for parasites rates as low to moderate (2/5), primarily based on historical use with minimal scientific backing.
