Evidence supporting the use of: Acetogenin
For the health condition: Parasites (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Acetogenins are a class of compounds primarily found in the Annonaceae family (such as Annona muricata, also known as soursop or graviola). Their use against parasites is largely rooted in traditional medicine practices, especially in Central and South America and parts of Africa, where extracts of these plants have been used to address a wide range of ailments, including parasitic infections. The traditional use is based on ethnobotanical knowledge rather than rigorous scientific validation.
Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that annonaceous acetogenins possess cytotoxic, anti-microbial, and anti-parasitic activities in vitro. For example, certain acetogenins have shown activity against Leishmania species and other protozoan parasites. However, these findings are preliminary, mainly confined to cell culture or animal models, and are not sufficient to establish efficacy or safety in humans. There are no high-quality clinical trials substantiating the use of acetogenins or acetogenin-containing plant extracts for treating human parasitic infections. As such, while there is a traditional basis for their use, scientific evidence remains limited and inconclusive.
