Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Lipase is an enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas and is essential for the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. Its use as a supplement is scientifically validated in cases where pancreatic function is compromised, such as in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or after certain surgical procedures affecting the pancreas. When the pancreas, including the tail region, is unable to produce adequate digestive enzymes, supplemental lipase can restore fat digestion and absorption, preventing steatorrhea (fatty stools), malnutrition, and associated symptoms.

Clinical guidelines and multiple studies support the use of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), which contains lipase, as a standard treatment for individuals with pancreatic insufficiency (Othman et al., 2017). Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated improved fat absorption and nutritional status in affected patients. While lipase supplementation is not typically recommended for individuals with normal pancreatic function, its efficacy in supporting digestive capacity in those with pancreatic disorders is well established.

Therefore, the use of lipase to support the pancreatic body system, particularly in the context of enzyme insufficiency, is strongly supported by scientific evidence.
