Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng (Oriental ginseng), has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is considered a general tonic to support vitality and overall health. Its use for supporting the pancreas, and by extension pancreatic functions such as insulin production and glucose metabolism, is rooted in these traditional practices. TCM practitioners often use ginseng to "strengthen the spleen and pancreas," terms which refer more broadly to digestive and metabolic health in this medical paradigm. While a number of preclinical and small clinical studies have explored the effects of ginseng and its active components (ginsenosides) on blood glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity, the evidence remains inconclusive and often of low quality. Most of these studies focus on diabetes or metabolic syndrome rather than direct pancreatic support in healthy individuals. Therefore, while there is a solid traditional rationale for using Oriental ginseng to support the pancreas, robust scientific validation is still lacking. At this time, the primary justification for its use in supporting the pancreas is traditional, with the scientific evidence being suggestive but not definitive.
