Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhus coriaria, commonly known as sumac, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. Sumac has been employed traditionally as a remedy for various digestive ailments, including overacidity and indigestion. The rationale behind its use is largely based on its reputed astringent and mildly alkaline properties, which were thought to help balance excessive stomach acid and soothe gastrointestinal discomfort.

In terms of scientific validation, however, there is only limited evidence. Some laboratory studies have indicated that Rhus coriaria possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but direct clinical trials examining its efficacy in treating overacidity or gastroesophageal reflux in humans are lacking. Most references to its use for overacidity are found in ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine texts rather than peer-reviewed clinical research. Therefore, while its use for overacidity is supported by tradition and historical usage, robust scientific validation is currently insufficient, and the evidence level is rated as low to moderate.
