Evidence supporting the use of: Thai kudzu
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Thai kudzu (Pueraria mirifica) has a long history of use in traditional Thai medicine, particularly for women's health. Traditionally, it has been employed to alleviate menopausal symptoms, promote youthfulness, and support reproductive health, which includes the ovarian system. The plant contains high levels of phytoestrogens, such as miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, which are structurally similar to human estrogen. These compounds are thought to mimic estrogen's effects in the body and may help balance hormonal fluctuations associated with menopause or support ovarian function.
While there is a significant tradition of using Thai kudzu for women’s health in Thailand and some neighboring regions, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for ovarian support specifically is limited and preliminary. Most scientific studies to date have focused on its general estrogenic effects, and some small-scale clinical trials have reported improvements in menopausal symptoms, which may be indirectly related to ovarian hormone production. However, robust clinical trials directly linking Thai kudzu to improved ovarian health or function are lacking. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by tradition, with emerging but insufficient scientific support.
