Evidence supporting the use of: Sage oil
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sage oil (derived from Salvia officinalis) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in supporting women's reproductive health, including the ovaries. In folk medicine and some naturopathic practices, sage has been used to help manage symptoms related to the menstrual cycle and menopause, such as hot flashes and irregular periods. This traditional use is thought to be due to sage’s phytoestrogen content, which may have mild estrogen-like effects in the body. However, while some laboratory studies have investigated the estrogenic or hormonal activity of sage extracts, robust clinical evidence supporting its direct benefits for ovarian health or function in humans is lacking. Scientific studies have mostly focused on sage’s effects on cognitive function or as an antimicrobial, rather than on reproductive health. Therefore, while its use for supporting the ovaries is common in traditional herbalism, especially aromatherapy and phytotherapy, there is limited scientific validation at this time.
