Evidence supporting the use of: Inositol
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Inositol, particularly the myo-inositol form, is backed by a growing body of scientific evidence for its use in supporting ovarian function, especially in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a common endocrine disorder characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, ovarian dysfunction, and insulin resistance. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that myo-inositol supplementation can improve ovarian function, restore ovulation, and enhance fertility in women with PCOS. The mechanism involves improving insulin sensitivity, which in turn helps to regulate hormonal imbalances that negatively impact the ovaries. Studies have also demonstrated benefits in reducing androgen levels, improving menstrual regularity, and increasing pregnancy rates compared to placebo.
Inositol is generally well tolerated and is considered a safe supplement. The evidence is strongest in the context of PCOS, and although some studies also suggest potential benefits for general ovarian health and oocyte (egg) quality in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies, the primary scientific support remains for PCOS-related issues. The 4/5 evidence rating reflects robust support in this area, with consistent findings across multiple well-designed studies, though broader application for all women’s ovarian health is less established.
