For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
European peony (Paeonia officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European and Chinese herbal medicine for supporting women’s reproductive health, including the ovaries. Traditionally, peony root has been used to address menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other gynecological concerns. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), white peony (Paeonia lactiflora, which is closely related to European peony) is frequently combined with other herbs to "nourish the blood" and regulate the menstrual cycle. Historical European herbal texts also reference peony for managing "female complaints," although these accounts are generally anecdotal and not based on formal clinical studies.
Scientific research on Paeonia officinalis specifically is limited. Most available studies focus on Paeonia lactiflora, particularly in combination formulas like Shaoyao-Gancao Tang, which have shown some promise for improving ovulatory function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and for balancing hormones. However, these findings cannot be directly attributed to European peony (P. officinalis) and often involve multi-herbal preparations. There is a lack of robust clinical trials directly linking European peony to ovarian health or function. Therefore, the use of European peony for supporting the ovaries is primarily rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation.
