Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for supporting women's health, including the ovaries and the broader reproductive system. Historically, clary sage essential oil has been used for its purported ability to ease menstrual discomfort, balance hormones, and support emotional well-being during the menstrual cycle. Folk traditions in Europe often employed clary sage infusions or essential oil for menstrual irregularities and symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and mood swings.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some small studies and laboratory research suggest that clary sage oil may have mild estrogenic effects, potentially influencing hormone balance, and may help alleviate stress or promote relaxation (possibly through inhalation). One clinical study found a reduction in cortisol levels and a subjective sense of improved mood in women who inhaled clary sage oil, but direct effects on ovarian health or function have not been rigorously studied. There is insufficient robust clinical evidence to confirm that clary sage has a specific, direct action on the ovaries or ovarian hormones. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by anecdotal reports, the scientific evidence remains preliminary and inconclusive.
