Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for women’s health. In TCM, the root (known as Bai Shao) is considered to nourish the blood, regulate menstruation, and support the function of the liver, which is believed to play a key role in reproductive health and the wellbeing of the ovaries. Traditional formulas containing Chinese peony are used for menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. The theoretical basis in TCM is that Chinese peony helps to harmonize the blood and alleviate “Liver Qi stagnation,” which is often linked to gynecological issues.

Scientific research provides some support, though evidence is limited and mostly derived from animal studies or small clinical trials. Peony root contains compounds such as paeoniflorin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and hormonal modulating effects in laboratory settings. Some studies, often in combination with other herbs (like licorice in the formula Shaoyao-Gancao Tang), suggest potential benefits for hormonal balance and menstrual health. However, there is insufficient large-scale, high-quality clinical research directly confirming the efficacy of Chinese peony for ovarian health or specific ovarian disorders in humans. Thus, its use for supporting the ovaries is justified more by tradition than robust scientific validation.
