Evidence supporting the use of: Ashwagandha
For the body system: Ovaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily as a Rasayana (rejuvenative) herb for general vitality, stress resilience, and hormonal balance. Traditionally, it is valued for its adaptogenic properties and is sometimes used to support reproductive health in both men and women, including support for menstrual health and fertility. However, most of the evidence for its benefits for the ovaries specifically is rooted in traditional systems rather than rigorous modern science.
Scientific studies on ashwagandha's direct effects on ovarian function are very limited. Some small clinical and animal studies suggest ashwagandha may help regulate hormones, reduce stress-related disruptions to the menstrual cycle, and improve sexual function, which may indirectly benefit ovarian health. Its potential to reduce cortisol and modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis could theoretically support reproductive hormone balance. However, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating ovarian function or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are lacking.
In summary, ashwagandha’s use for supporting the ovaries is primarily based on traditional practices and indirect mechanisms suggested by preliminary research, rather than robust scientific validation targeting ovarian health specifically.
