Evidence supporting the use of: Bee products
For the body system: Other Body Parts
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bee products, such as honey, propolis, royal jelly, and bee pollen, have a long history of traditional use in supporting various aspects of human health, including the maintenance and healing of skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue—collectively considered "Other Body Parts." In many cultures, honey has been topically applied to wounds, burns, and skin conditions for its perceived antimicrobial and soothing properties. Propolis, a resinous mixture produced by bees, has similarly been used in folk medicine for wound healing and as a protective barrier on the skin. Royal jelly and bee pollen are sometimes consumed or applied for their purported benefits on hair and nail strength.
While there is some preliminary scientific research that suggests bee products may have beneficial effects on wound healing and skin health due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, the overall evidence remains limited and inconclusive. Most clinical studies are small, lack rigorous controls, or have methodological limitations. The use of bee products for other body parts, such as hair and nails, is supported more by anecdotal and traditional claims than robust scientific data. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and some scientific evidence exists, the overall level of support is modest, justifying a rating of 2.
