Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has some emerging scientific evidence suggesting a potential role in supporting the recall and vividness of dreams, with a few studies specifically exploring its impact on nightmares. A small, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2018 (Aspy et al., Perceptual and Motor Skills) found that supplementation with 240 mg of vitamin B6 before sleep enhanced dream recall and vividness in healthy adults. However, this study did not directly investigate the frequency or severity of nightmares, focusing instead on dream recall as an outcome. The proposed mechanism involves vitamin B6’s role in synthesizing neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which is involved in sleep regulation and dream activity.

There is limited direct evidence supporting the use of vitamin B6 specifically for the treatment or prevention of nightmares, especially in clinical populations. Some anecdotal and preliminary reports suggest that improved dream recall and vividness might be associated with more lucid dreaming, which could potentially help individuals exert some control over nightmares. However, robust clinical trials targeting nightmare frequency or severity are lacking.
