Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), despite the name, is not a true ginseng but has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Russia, China, and other parts of Asia. It has been traditionally used as an "adaptogen," a substance believed to help the body resist physical and mental stress, which includes symptoms like nervousness. Folk and herbal medicine traditions have recommended Siberian ginseng to improve stamina, reduce fatigue, and bolster resilience to stress and anxiety-like symptoms. However, the scientific literature specifically examining its efficacy in treating nervousness is limited and inconsistent. Some small clinical studies and animal research suggest adaptogenic effects that may indirectly support the nervous system and stress resilience, but most of these studies are not directly focused on nervousness as a clinical condition, and rigorous, large-scale trials are lacking. While preliminary evidence points to possible benefits in improving mental performance under stress, this does not equate to direct treatment of nervousness. Therefore, its use for nervousness is primarily supported by traditional practice, with only weak or indirect scientific evidence.
