For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alisma (Alisma orientale, also known as "ze xie" in traditional Chinese medicine) has a longstanding history of use as a herbal remedy for conditions related to water metabolism and the urinary system, including nephritis. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Alisma is considered a "drain dampness" herb and is included in several classical formulations aimed at reducing edema, promoting urination, and supporting kidney health. The use of Alisma for nephritis is primarily based on these traditional concepts, rather than modern biomedical understanding of the disease.
Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Alisma for nephritis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts of Alisma may have anti-inflammatory, diuretic, or renoprotective effects, but these studies are preliminary and not directly translatable to human nephritis treatment. High-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while Alisma remains a common ingredient in TCM formulas for nephritis and related kidney disorders, the evidence supporting its use is primarily traditional and rated as weak by modern standards.
Overall, the use of Alisma for nephritis is justified historically within the TCM framework, but scientific validation is insufficient at present.
