Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but its primary functions are to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and "move blood stasis." In TCM, Tree Peony root (Mu Dan Pi) is not specifically or commonly indicated for nausea and vomiting. However, some traditional herbal formulas that may include Tree Peony as a minor ingredient are used for complex syndromes that occasionally involve digestive symptoms, including nausea or vomiting. The use of Tree Peony in these formulas is generally not for direct antiemetic effects but for its role in modulating underlying patterns such as heat or stagnation. There is little to no direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Tree Peony for nausea and vomiting. Modern pharmacological studies focus mostly on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cardiovascular effects, rather than gastrointestinal symptoms. Therefore, while its inclusion in some broader traditional formulas might indirectly relate to digestive issues, the evidence supporting direct use for nausea and vomiting is extremely limited and primarily traditional rather than scientific.
