Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea vegetables, such as kelp, nori, dulse, and wakame, have a long history of use in various cultures, particularly in East Asia, for promoting general health and well-being. Their use to support the nails is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence. Sea vegetables are naturally rich in minerals like iodine, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements, as well as some vitamins such as vitamin C and certain B vitamins. Traditional beliefs suggest that the mineral content of sea vegetables may help strengthen nails or promote growth, as brittle or weak nails can sometimes be linked to mineral deficiencies.

However, there is limited direct scientific research specifically examining the effects of sea vegetables on nail health. Most of the support is indirect, relating to the general role of adequate mineral and nutrient intake in maintaining healthy nails. For example, deficiencies in certain nutrients (such as zinc, iron, or biotin) are known to affect nail strength and appearance, but sea vegetables are not a major source of all of these nutrients. Therefore, while traditional use is well-established, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence for their effectiveness in supporting nail health is modest at best.
