Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pearl, often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is historically believed to benefit the skin, nails, and hair. In TCM, pearl powder is thought to "nourish yin" and "calm the spirit," with external and internal use promoted for beauty and health. Traditional texts claim it strengthens nails and promotes their healthy growth. However, modern scientific research on pearl's effects specifically on the nail body system is extremely limited. Pearl contains calcium carbonate, trace minerals, and amino acids, but there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating that these components, when consumed or applied topically, directly enhance nail health. Most modern use for nails is based on historical precedent rather than validated science. A few small studies have examined pearl powder's general antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings do not directly translate to nail strength or growth. In summary, the use of pearl to support the nail body system is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal scientific validation, and overall evidence remains weak.
