Evidence supporting the use of: MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is sometimes used in dietary supplements marketed for nail health. The scientific rationale stems from MSM being a source of sulfur, an essential element in the formation of keratin, the primary protein in nails. Some proponents claim that sulfur provided by MSM may help strengthen nails and reduce brittleness. However, clinical evidence supporting MSM’s direct benefits for nail health is limited. A small number of pilot studies and anecdotal reports suggest potential improvements in nail strength and appearance with MSM supplementation, but these studies are typically small, lack rigorous controls, or are combined with other ingredients (such as biotin or collagen), making it difficult to isolate MSM’s effects. One small open-label trial reported subjective improvements in nail condition among participants taking MSM, but the lack of placebo control and small sample size limit the strength of the findings.
Systematic reviews of MSM focus primarily on its effects for joint health and inflammation, with little attention to nail health. Regulatory and authoritative bodies do not currently recognize MSM as an established treatment for nail disorders. While there is a plausible biochemical basis for MSM’s potential to support nail structure, the direct scientific evidence remains weak and preliminary. Therefore, MSM’s use for nail support is based more on theoretical rationale and early, limited studies rather than robust clinical validation.
