Evidence supporting the use of: Egg white protein
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Egg white protein is a source of high-quality, complete protein containing all essential amino acids, which play a fundamental role in the synthesis of keratin, the primary structural protein in nails. Several scientific sources acknowledge that inadequate protein intake can lead to brittle or weak nails, as keratin formation is compromised. While egg white protein itself has not been specifically studied in clinical trials for nail health, its amino acid profile is well-suited to support general protein needs, which indirectly supports nail growth and strength.
Most of the evidence connecting protein intake and nail health is general, rather than specific to egg white protein, and comes from observational or mechanistic studies. There is no robust clinical evidence that using egg white protein as a supplement specifically improves nail health in individuals who already meet their protein requirements. However, for individuals with protein deficiencies, increasing high-quality protein intake, including from egg white, may be beneficial for nail strength. In summary, while there is a clear biological rationale for protein in nail health, the direct evidence for egg white protein supplementation for this purpose is limited.
