Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Collagen supplementation is increasingly used to support nail health, and there is moderate scientific evidence to justify this use. Collagen is a structural protein abundant in the human body, including in nails, skin, and hair. Several small human studies suggest that oral collagen peptides may improve nail growth and reduce brittleness. For example, a 2017 open-label study published in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that daily supplementation with bioactive collagen peptides over 24 weeks led to increased nail growth rate and a decrease in the frequency of broken nails in 25 participants. Another 2019 review in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology highlighted that collagen peptides may support the body’s natural production of keratin, the primary protein in nails, though more robust, large-scale trials are needed.

Despite promising results, the available studies often have limitations, such as small sample sizes, lack of placebo controls, and short durations. The mechanism by which collagen supports nail health is not yet fully understood but is thought to involve improved amino acid availability for keratin synthesis and enhanced extracellular matrix integrity in the nail bed. While traditional or folk medicine has not strongly emphasized collagen for nail health, current scientific interest is growing. Overall, the evidence is moderate but not definitive, justifying a score of 3 out of 5.
