Collagen supplementation, particularly in the form of hydrolyzed collagen peptides (often labeled as "collagen (mixed)"), has a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting its use for nail health. Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of oral collagen on nail growth, brittleness, and appearance. A notable open-label trial published in 2017 in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported that daily supplementation with bioactive collagen peptides for 24 weeks led to a 12% increase in nail growth rate and a 42% decrease in the frequency of broken nails among participants with brittle nail syndrome. The improvements persisted for at least four weeks after supplementation ceased. The proposed mechanism is that collagen peptides provide amino acid building blocks and may stimulate the body's own production of keratin, the primary protein in nails.

However, while these results are encouraging, the evidence base is still limited by a lack of large, randomized, placebo-controlled trials. Most studies to date have modest sample sizes, and some have methodological limitations such as lack of blinding or reliance on subjective outcome measures. Nevertheless, the available research does suggest a beneficial effect of collagen supplementation on nail strength and growth, which is consistent with its traditional use for supporting skin, hair, and nails. Therefore, the use of collagen (mixed) for nail health is justified by a moderate degree of scientific validation.
