Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chicken is commonly consumed as a source of high-quality protein, which is an essential nutrient for the growth and maintenance of body tissues, including fingernails. The key scientific rationale for its use to support the nails is its rich content of amino acids, especially those needed for the synthesis of keratin—the primary structural protein in nails. Chicken is also a source of B vitamins, such as biotin (vitamin B7), which has been shown in some studies to improve nail strength and reduce brittleness in individuals with biotin deficiency.

However, while protein and biotin are both important for nail health, there is limited direct evidence that consumption of chicken itself, as opposed to other sources of these nutrients, specifically supports nail growth or strength. Most scientific literature focuses on overall protein and micronutrient intake, rather than singling out chicken. Still, diets deficient in protein or biotin are known to result in nail abnormalities, which provides indirect support for the idea that chicken, as a rich source of both, could be beneficial for the nails. Therefore, while chicken is scientifically justified as part of a balanced diet for maintaining nail health, its effects are not unique compared to other high-protein foods.
