Evidence supporting the use of: Brazil nut
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Brazil nuts are commonly associated with nail health due to their exceptionally high selenium content. Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily processes, including antioxidant defense and the maintenance of healthy hair and nails. Scientific literature has established that selenium deficiency can manifest as brittle nails, discoloration, or even nail loss (NIH, Selenium Fact Sheet). A single Brazil nut can contain up to 95 micrograms of selenium, which meets or exceeds the recommended daily intake for adults.
Several observational and interventional studies have shown that selenium supplementation can improve nail strength and appearance in individuals with low selenium levels (Rayman, 2012). However, robust randomized controlled trials specifically targeting Brazil nut consumption and nail health outcomes are limited. The evidence is stronger for populations with known selenium deficiency, while benefits for individuals with adequate selenium intake are less clear. It’s important to note that excessive selenium intake can cause selenosis, which itself can lead to nail abnormalities.
In summary, the use of Brazil nuts to support nail health is scientifically plausible and supported by moderate evidence, largely due to their selenium content and the established link between selenium and nail integrity. Still, more targeted research is warranted.
