Evidence supporting the use of: Animal protein
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Animal protein is scientifically validated to contribute to nail health, primarily due to its role in providing essential amino acids required for the synthesis of keratin—the main structural protein in nails. Nails are composed largely of keratin, and inadequate intake of protein can result in brittle, weak, or slow-growing nails. Multiple studies and clinical observations indicate that diets deficient in protein are correlated with poor nail quality, while adequate protein consumption, including from animal sources, supports normal nail structure and growth. Animal proteins such as those from meat, fish, eggs, and dairy are considered "complete proteins," containing all the essential amino acids necessary for human health. These amino acids are crucial not only for keratin production but also for other cellular processes involved in nail maintenance and repair. Although there is no direct clinical trial specifically administering "animal protein" as a supplement for nail health, the role of dietary protein in nail integrity is well established in nutrition science literature and textbooks. Thus, the use of animal protein to support the nails body system is supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence.
