YK11 is a synthetic steroidal selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has garnered attention in the bodybuilding community for its purported muscle-building effects. Its proposed mechanism involves partial agonism at the androgen receptor and upregulation of follistatin, a protein that inhibits myostatin, which is known to limit muscle growth. The scientific evidence supporting YK11’s effectiveness in supporting the muscle body system is limited primarily to in vitro (cell culture) studies, most notably a 2011 paper by Kanno et al. which demonstrated that YK11 could increase muscle cell differentiation and follistatin expression in mouse muscle cells. However, there are currently no published human clinical trials or robust animal studies confirming its efficacy or safety for muscle growth. Regulatory agencies have not approved YK11 for medical or supplement use, and it is listed as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Therefore, while there is mechanistic and preclinical evidence suggesting YK11 may have muscle-supporting properties, the lack of human data significantly limits the strength of the scientific validation. The evidence is rated as 2 out of 5 due to promising, but unconfirmed, cellular data and the absence of traditional or clinical support.
