Vitamin E, particularly in the form of natural tocopherols, is an essential fat-soluble antioxidant that has been studied for its role in muscle health. Scientific research indicates that Vitamin E helps protect muscle cell membranes from oxidative damage due to its antioxidant properties. This is especially relevant during exercise or muscle injury, where oxidative stress is increased. Studies in animals and humans have shown that Vitamin E deficiency can lead to muscle weakness, impaired muscle growth, and increased susceptibility to exercise-induced muscle damage. In rare cases, severe deficiency in humans has been associated with neuromuscular problems, including myopathy.
However, the evidence for Vitamin E supplementation improving muscle strength or recovery in healthy individuals or athletes is limited and inconsistent. Some studies suggest a modest benefit in reducing markers of muscle damage after strenuous exercise, but many clinical trials have failed to show significant improvements in muscle performance or reduced soreness. The benefit appears more robust in people with deficiencies or certain neuromuscular diseases, rather than the general population.
