Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B1 (thiamin disulfide)
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin B1, also known as thiamin (not thiamin disulfide, which is a synthetic form sometimes used for increased stability), is an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays a critical role in energy metabolism, particularly in the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. Thiamin serves as a coenzyme (thiamin pyrophosphate) for several enzymes involved in the Krebs cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway, which are fundamental biochemical processes for energy production in all cells, including muscle tissue.
Deficiency of thiamin can lead to muscle weakness, fatigue, and, in severe cases, the disease beriberi, which is characterized by profound muscular and neurological symptoms. While thiamin supplementation is clearly beneficial in reversing deficiency states and the associated muscle symptoms, there is limited evidence that supplemental thiamin enhances muscle function in healthy, non-deficient individuals. Most clinical and experimental studies focus on preventing and treating deficiency rather than enhancing athletic performance or muscle health in the general population.
In summary, the use of vitamin B1 to support the muscle system is scientifically validated in cases of deficiency, where it is necessary for optimal muscle function. However, there is little evidence to support its use for muscle health in individuals with adequate thiamin status. The evidence rating reflects its essential role in deficiency, but lack of strong evidence for benefit beyond correcting deficiency.
