Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of traditional use for supporting muscle health, particularly in the form of topical applications such as oils or compresses. Historically, herbalists and practitioners of folk medicine have recommended chamomile for muscle aches, spasms, and general discomfort. The basis for this use primarily comes from its reputed anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties, as well as its potential to promote relaxation and reduce tension. Essential oil of Roman Chamomile is sometimes massaged into sore muscles to help relieve pain and stiffness, and chamomile baths have been used for similar purposes.
Scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. A few in vitro and small animal studies suggest that chamomile extracts may have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, which could theoretically benefit muscle discomfort. However, robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating efficacy for muscle health are lacking. Most of the support for Roman Chamomile’s use in this context remains anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation. Therefore, while its use for muscle support is well-established in traditional medicine, the overall strength of evidence is modest.
