Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Vegetable proteins, derived from sources such as legumes, soy, grains, nuts, and seeds, are scientifically validated to support the muscles body system. Proteins are essential macronutrients required for the growth, repair, and maintenance of muscle tissue. The body uses the amino acids from dietary protein to synthesize new muscle fibers and repair those that are damaged during physical activity. Numerous clinical studies have shown that adequate protein intake, including from plant sources, contributes to muscle protein synthesis and supports muscle mass in both physically active individuals and the elderly.

While animal proteins have traditionally been considered more ‘complete’ due to their amino acid profiles, research has demonstrated that a varied diet with diverse plant proteins can provide all essential amino acids necessary for muscle health. Studies in vegetarian and vegan athletes show that, with sufficient total protein intake, plant-based proteins are effective for building and maintaining muscle. Additionally, soy protein and certain blends of plant proteins (such as pea and rice) have been found to be nearly as effective as animal-based proteins in stimulating muscle protein synthesis.

Major health organizations, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, acknowledge that plant-based proteins can meet the protein needs of individuals engaged in strength and endurance activities. Therefore, the use of vegetable protein to support muscle health is strongly supported by scientific evidence.
