Evidence supporting the use of: Phosphorus
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Phosphorus is an essential mineral that plays a critical role in supporting the muscular system. It is a key component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy carrier in muscle cells, which is necessary for muscle contraction and relaxation. Additionally, phosphorus is involved in the formation of creatine phosphate, another important energy reserve in muscle tissue used during short bursts of intense activity. Scientific research confirms that phosphorus is crucial for cellular energy metabolism, and insufficient phosphorus levels can lead to muscle weakness, fatigue, and impaired muscle function (NIH Fact Sheet). However, phosphorus deficiency in healthy individuals is rare due to its abundance in many foods. Supplementation is generally only necessary in specific medical conditions that cause low phosphorus levels (hypophosphatemia). There are no substantial studies showing that supplemental phosphorus enhances muscle function or exercise performance in people with normal phosphorus status. Thus, while phosphorus is scientifically validated as necessary for healthy muscle function, the evidence does not support routine supplementation beyond dietary intake for muscle health in the general population.
