Evidence supporting the use of: Nitric Oxide
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Nitric Oxide (NO) is a molecule naturally produced in the body that plays a crucial role in vasodilation, the process of relaxing and widening blood vessels. This function has made NO a popular target for supplements intended to support the muscular system, particularly in athletic and bodybuilding contexts. Dietary supplements often use precursors such as L-arginine or L-citrulline to boost NO levels, aiming to enhance blood flow to muscles during exercise.
Several studies have investigated the effects of NO precursors on exercise performance and muscle function. Some research indicates that increased NO production can lead to improved blood flow, nutrient delivery, and removal of metabolic waste in muscles during exercise, potentially enhancing exercise performance and recovery. The evidence is strongest for L-citrulline, showing modest improvements in exercise performance, particularly during high-intensity endurance and resistance training. However, the effects are generally described as small to moderate, and not all studies find significant benefits.
While NO precursors are widely used and there is a plausible biological mechanism, large-scale, long-term clinical trials demonstrating substantial muscle growth or strength benefits are lacking. Most benefits appear to be limited to acute improvements in exercise performance or recovery, rather than direct muscle growth. In summary, there is scientific rationale and some supporting evidence for the use of NO to support the muscular system, but the overall strength of evidence is moderate.
